• BASILICA OF SAN VITALE

The Basilica of San Vitale puts together Eastern and Western architectures and mosaics. Thanks to the representation of Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora, it has inspired many poets and travellers over time.

• MAUSOLEUM OF GALLA PLACIDIA
Via San Vitale, 17
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is a treasure chest hiding a heart made of coloured mosaics, including the blue sky with golden stars of the dome. Here you can also see Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom. Find the flames and you’ll know how what happened to him.

• NEONIAN BAPTISTERY
Piazza Arcivescovado, 1
The Neonian Baptistery is one of Ravenna’s most ancient monuments. The main colour is blue, just like in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, of which it is a contemporary. Find Saint Peter, the oldest apostle, the one with white hair and beard!

• ST. ANDREW CHAPEL (OR ARCHIEPISCOPAL CHAPEL)
Piazza Arcivescovado, 1
St. Andrew Chapel (or Archiepiscopal Chapel) was the bishop’s private church. Here, you can see a large image of Christ dressed as a warrior. The mosaics hide countless different species of birds! Can you find them all?

• ARIAN BAPTISTERY
Vicolo degli Ariani, 1
In the dome of the Arian Baptistery you can see a mosaic representing the river Jordan and the procession of the 12 apostles. Look at the water: it seems transparent!

• BASILICA OF SANT’APOLLINARE NUOVO
Via di Roma, 53
The mosaics of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo tell the story of Jesus, but are also a portrait of Ravenna in the 6th century, with the Port of Classe and the ancient palace of Theodoric. Watch out for what’s behind the curtains…

• MAUSOLEUM OF THEODORIC

The dome of the Mausoleum of Theodoric was built with a single and very heavy block of stone. Legend has it that Theodoric was killed by a lightning that struck him right through the dome.

The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe celebrates the Patron Saint of the city, portrayed in the apse in a heavenly landscape. Did you know that the 12 white sheep represent the 12 apostles?

• BASILICA OF SAN FRANCESCO

Inside the Basilica of San Francesco you can see a flooded crypt where many goldfish swim! Dante Alighieri used to spend much time here.

• DANTE’S TOMB

Between Museo Dante and Piazza San Francesco is Dante’s Tomb. The poet spent the last years of his life in Ravenna, and here he rests forever.

• MUSEO DANTE
Via Dante Alighieri, 2a
Museo Dante will teach you the history of Dante Alighieri through images and historical objects. This poet wrote a very important work for the Italian language. Do you know its name?

The subsoil of Ravenna is full of surprises, like the special archaeological site of the Domus of the Stone Carpets: an ancient roman villa with wonderful mosaic pavements.
