On the occasion of the Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, from 25th October 2025 to 18th January 2026, the Classis Museum will host the exhibition MOSAICS ON PAPER: FROM RAVENNA TO PARIS, curated by Giuseppe Sassatelli, Fabrizio Corbara and Daniele Torcellini
The exhibition is dedicated to paper reproductions of Ravenna’s Byzantine mosaics, which are fundamental tools for promoting and documenting the city’s mosaic heritage and for disseminating it throughout the world.
Some of the cartoons on display in the exhibition were sent in 1931 from Ravenna to Paris, to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, to be part of a highly acclaimed exhibition that brought Byzantine art and the reception of Byzantine aesthetics in the artistic avant-garde in Europe back to the centre of international cultural debate.
