Ravenna Festival • 2020
Different venues of Ravenna
Dates: from 03/06/2020 to 17/07/2020
It is no mystery that several verses of Dante hint to the Byzantine history of Ravenna: there is an Orient soul that resides in the basilicas and in the mosaics of Ravenna, and that inspired the Ravenna Festival, which, getting closer to the 700 death anniversary of Dante Alighieri, turns the poet's verse "Dolce color d'oriental Zaffiro" into the leitmotiv of its 31st edition.
From 3 June to 17 July, following the Supreme Poet's words, the Festival will present, as usual, great guests and amazing performances, making of this bright theme the cornerstone of the storytelling, searching even its darkest side.
Ravenna will liven up with many events dedicated to dancing, culture, music, with a daily programme rich of prestigious and beloved names, besides the already known events, which celebrate the history and the art of the city, such as Young Artists for Dante, Vespers of St. Vitale and the Liturgies In Templo Domini.
The 31st edition will inaugurate with the 20th-century masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass, and, along with the well-established event with maestro Riccardo Muti, the podium will welcome Ivan Fischer and Valery Gergiev.
Eclecticism is the keyword for 2020, featuring the guests Vinicio Capossela, Stefano Bollani and Neri Marcorè as well as the 100 Cellos headed by Giovanni Sollima and Enrico Melozzi. The stage will glow with the exclusive ballet of Johan Inger, the Ballet of Flanders and the Hofesh Shechter Company.
The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo will open its doors to the Festival as well, hosting the Theatre of Voices by Paul Hillier. Finally, this amazing season will end on the one hand with the Italian première La Fura dels Baus and the mise en scène of Carmina Burana, and on the other with a gala dance evening in homage to Alicia Alonso.
