Fifty years dedicated to images - or better said - to "splendid failures", as the title of the exhibition Oliviero Toscani. Più di 50 Anni di Magnifici Fallimenti says, curated by Nicolas Ballario and scheduled at the MAR Museum of Ravenna from 14 April to 30 June 2019.
Extreme and revolutionary in every way, Oliviero Toscani has achieved much success during his career, especially thanks to his most criticized and well-known advertisement campaigns. Among the artworks on display the famous Bacio tra prete e suora - the kiss between the priest and the nun (1991), Cuori (1996) with the three hearts White/Black/Yellow, No-Anorexia (2007) and many others. On display will be also the series Razza Umana, a social-political, cultural and anthropological study for which Toscani installed photographic sets in dozens of cities across the world in order to research the morphology of the human beings, to see how they look like, which face they have and to know their differences.
Moreover, the exhibition features works realised for the fashion world that the photographer helped to dramatically change: from the pictures of Donna Jordan to the ones of Monica Bellucci, beyond the portraits of Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Carmelo Bene, Federico Fellini and some of the most important personalities belonging to the world culture of the 1970s onwards.
This exhibition will show all the creative power and career of Toscani through his most important works, which made the world talk about thorny matters such as racism, the death penalty, AIDS and war.
