On the occasion of the 6th Ravenna Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, Mar will host an artwork by French-US artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
Vanitas is the title for the project that includes a big mosaic sculpture representing a skull, created by the artist in 1988 using glass mirrored tiles and palladium leaves.
In the work on display Tête de Mort I, Niki de Saint Phalle dismisses the graveness of death through the large size of his sculpture, and she ironically states the overcoming of the end with the continuity of life.
The mirrored tiles reflect the image of the observer, forcing a direct confrontation with the inner self, as if it were a memento mori, a symbol of end. Nonetheless, they also return at the same time the multiplicity of human identity: refractions of personality that are put together into an overall identity.
