From the 7th October to the 26th November 2017, artworks and artists from all around the world meet in Ravenna in occasion of the 5th edition of RavennaMosaico - Rassegna Biennale di Mosaico Contemporaneo (Biennial exhibition of contemporary mosaic).
Monuments, museums, cloisters and symbolic places of the city will become exceptional galleries where ancient and contemporary art will be in constant dialogue through exhibitions, presentations, meetings and specific installations.
Two are the major events of this year's edition:
• the exhibition Montezuma, Fontana, Mirko. La scultura in mosaico dalle origini ad oggi - curated by Alfonso Panzetta with the collaboration of Daniele Torcellini - at MAR Museum, will exhibit 140 masterpieces to admire very closely;
• at Palazzo Rasponi delle Teste, the event SICIS Destinazione Micromosaico. Alla scoperta di un universo tanto immenso quanto immensamente piccolo will take place to celebrate 30 years of activity of one of the greatest excellences of international design.
The Old Franciscan Cloisters will host Opere dal Mondo, a selection of works from diverse international artists, partners of AIMC, while in the Manica Lunga of the Classense Library don't miss the 4th edition of GAEM - Giovani Artisti e Mosaico, dedicated to all artists under 40 who use the mosaic technique in traditional or sperimental ways.
Always at the historic library there will be also an exhibition dedicated to artist Silvia Celeste Calcagno, curated by Davide Caroli in collaboration with the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, and the project Fabulae by Accademia di Belle Arti (School of Fine Arts) of Ravenna, a container of multiple events surrounded by a fascinating interweaving of stories.
At the National Museum several important solo exhibitions will be presented: Geografie a ritroso is dedicated to Felice Nittolo, curated by Emanuela Fiori and Giovanni Gardini; Rappresentazione anonima, curated by MARTe association and Emanuela Fiori, is dedicated to Clément Miteran; Transizione, curated by Daniele Torcellini and Roberta Bertozzi, is dedicated to Matylda Tracewska. The Museum will also host Il colore della scultura curated by Laura Gavioli.
Two Unesco monuments will open their ancient doors for site-specific installations by artist Marco de Luca, curated by Linda Kniffitz, Emanuela Fiori and Sandra Manara: Sudario at the Arian Baptistery and Chimera at the Mausoleum of Theoderic.
In addition, other spaces, ateliers and art galleries of the city will host displays, performances and solo exhibitions dedicated to the mosaic and its infinite facets.
But RavennaMosaico is also...
In the different mosaic ateliers of the city, you can visit a type of collective artwork dedicated to Dante's Inferno entitled Inferno in bottega. La Commedia di Dante alla luce del mosaico composed of single creations. Together with other exhibitions, plenty of space will be devoted to the preservation of artworks thanks to the Laboratorio di Restauro del Mosaico del Museo di Classe, that completed the restoration of the copy of the Madonna in Trono of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo.
A meeting entitled Le forme dell'Arte in città: il mosaico contemporaneo, organised by the Università Scuola Superiore Studi Città e Territorio, will deal with the topic of the relationship between street furniture and mosaic art.
And finally, the artistic and social values will give life to the project of the association DisOrdine which aimes at the redevelopment of the urban zone in front of the ancient prison of Ravenna with an intervention inspired by the maze of the Basilica of San Vitale and the direct participation of the imprisoned.
RavennaMosaico is promoted and organised by the Municipality of Ravenna with the precious contribution of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, of the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna and the Marcegaglia Carbon Steel.
