Closing day: Monday, Sunday
Hours: 9am - 6pm (last admission at 5.30pm)
The temporary exhibition entitled the temporary exhibiton La casa di Nostra Donna, dedicated to the church of Santa Maria in Porto Fuori, destroyed by bombing during World War II, will continue until 1st June 2017.
Thanks to the use of historic material (XVIII Century drawings, XIX Century notes and photographs taken in different periods) and a virtual 3D reconstruction, the exhibition aims at enabling a virtual visit of a church that used to be an important place of worship and a pilgrimage destination for Ravenna's believers. Santa Maria in Porto Fuori is mentioned in Dante's Commedia (Paradiso XXI, 121-122). and contributed to the refounding of the historic and artistic image of the city (worth a mention are the marvellous fourteenth-century frescoes) in the XVIII and XIX Century.
On November 5, 1944 Santa Maria in Porto Fuori was destroyed by Allied bombing, and with it also its splendid works of art. It is one of the most severe losses that the Italian artistic heritage suffered during an armed conflict. Worsening the situation, in the 90s the last few remains of paintings that had survived the bombing were stolen after the church's reconstruction, leaving little of the original church to posterity. The memory of the monument and its tragic fate survives only among the elderly citizens of Ravenna and scholars.
Exhibition curated by Alessandro Volpe. Organised by Ravenna City Council - Culture and MAR Museum. In partnership with Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna. Thanks to the support of: Arcidiocesi di Ravenna e Cervia, Istituzione Biblioteca Classense, Polo Museale dell’Emila-Romagna Museo Nazionale di Ravenna
