Dantesque Museum 2013
Via Dante Alighieri, 4/6 - Ravenna
Date: permanent exhibition
Event timetable: Tuesday - Sunday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Closed on Monday

The “Museo Dantesco” (Dante Museum) located nearby Dante’s tomb in the charming Old Franciscan Cloisters reopens on Saturday 23rd March after a long closure for restoration.
The museum was founded in 1921 with the purpose of hosting Dante’s relics donated by Italian and foreign organizations. It now proposes a brand new lay-out and a new exhibition itinerary which highlights the role played in Dante’s life by the city of Ravenna, where the exiled poet spent his last days.

The exhibition focuses on three main topics: firstly, the iconography of Dante, exemplified by several busts and paintings, raising the issue of his real features on which researchers have recently developed a new theory; secondly, the memories relating to the Tomb – built at the end of 18th century and designed by Camillo Morigia – and to the well-known issue of the transfer of Dante’s bones, that had been concealed for centuries until they were found by chance in 1865; thirdly, the fame and fortune of Alighieri. Numerous videos and multimedia devices complete the exhibition (among them, a multilingual version of the Divine Comedy), thus meeting the needs of visitors of all ages and nationalities.
