Romagna Peaches and Nectarines Pgi

The Romagna peach and nectarine are among the first peach varieties to have been given a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in Europe. They are hybrids between different varieties with white and yellow flesh.

Ravenna and its province have been a crucial benchmark for the origin of fruit farm industry. The first orchards – mainly peach orchards – were firtsly grown in an area near Massa Lombarda, between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Century.

Differently from the Romagna peach, characterised by fuzzy skin, the nectarine has a smooth and compact skin. Both fruits are juicy and taste sweet.

They are usually eaten at the end of meals and they are ideal for fruit salads, icecreams and sweets. Moreover their low calorific value makes them particularly suitable for summer diets.
