On 23rd July Ravenna celebrates its patron saint, Saint Apollinaris.
The most important event of this special day is the holy mass officiated by the Archbishop of Ravenna-Cervia. Tradition has it that Bishop Apollinaris lived between the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd century AD. He was first bishop of Ravenna and was martyred in the city of Classe. Today, two Late Antique basilicas are devoted to the worship of the Saint: Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe and Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo.
