The Festa della Madonna Greca is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Easter (Domenica in Albis) because, according to legend, the image of the Virgin appeared on the shores of Porto Fuori, near Ravenna, exactly on the Domenica in Albis of 1100.
The statue representing the icon of the Virgin, a delicate Byzantine bas-relief made from Parian marble, is kept in the Basilica of S. Maria in Porto. On the feast day there is a suggestive procession along the city dock and the Candiano canal, which takes the statue inside the basilica.
The Madonna Greca is the patron of the Archdiocese of Ravenna-Cervia and of the Vicariate of the Sea.
