RavennaMosaico 2019 • 6th Edition
Different places of Ravenna
Dates: from 06/10/2019 to 24/11/2019
From 6 October to 24 November, artworks and artists from all over the world meet in Ravenna for the sixth edition of RavennaMosaico - Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic.
Monuments, museums, cloisters, and symbol places of the city turn into exceptional open-air galleries where ancient and contemporary mosaic art build a dialogue thanks to exhibitions, conferences, meetings, and site-specific installations, proving Ravenna to be the undisputed capital of mosaic.
The Classense Library, Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, the National Museum, the museum Classis, and the monuments of the Unesco site are only some of the several and charming places that open up to exhibitions, conferences, and temporary installations.
Heart of the festival is the MAR museum, which, from 4 October to 12 January, beyond the usual permanent mosaic collection, will host two exhibitions not to be missed:
• Chuck Close. Mosaics, one of the greatest US contemporary artists, who brings his latest series of mosaic paintings in Ravenna
• Riccardo Zangelmi. Forever Young, the only Italian LEGO® Certified Professional (among only 16 across the world) shows what amazing works can come out from thousands of the most famous bricks in the world.
The wide spaces of the historical building Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, on the other hand, will host Opere dal Mondo, the traditional award-exhibition organised by AIMC that this year deals with the figure of Dante Alighieri. Always in Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, not to be missed is the exhibition dedicated to young artists under fourty, the 5th edition of GAeM - Giovani Artisti e Mosaico (young artists and mosaic).
The Classense Library opens its doors as well, welcoming contemporary mosaic in the section Manica Lunga, with the exhibition Incursioni, which collects the works created by the students of the Fine Arts Academy of Ravenna (several original projects, such as Micro&Macro, Tarocchi in mostra, Mosaici Ruvidi, Micromosaico sulla maschera di Yu Yu Zhao). The reading rooms on the ground level will host the sixth edition of Bibliomosaico, with a display of original works where mosaic art blends with the concept of book.
Even Classis Ravenna - Museum of the City and of the Territory welcomes mosaic art with the exhibition curated by Giuseppe Sassatelli entitled Tessere di mare. Dal mosaico antico alla copia moderna, featuring important mosaics dedicated to the sea world, whereas the National Museum of Ravenna presents Intersezioni with the works by Sara Vasini and Luca Freschi — two young artists, very different from one another, who share the desire of recovering the ancient world and its memory, building a bridge with contemporaneity.
The constant dialogue between old and new — Antiquity and contemporaneity touches also the Unesco monuments owned by the Church. The Neonian Baptistery, the Archiepiscopal Museum and the St. Andrew's Chapel house site-specific installations by Felice Nittolo, while the Basilica of San Vitale, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, and the Cathedral welcome the project Artifex Mosaico created by the students of the arts high school "Nervi Severini".
