Ravenna per Dante 2014
Various venues in the city
Dates: from 26/08/2014 to 30/09/2014, except on 08/09/2014, on 09/09/2014 and on 22/09/2014

Exiled from Florence, Dante Alighieri took shelter in Ravenna where he wrote part of the Purgatory and the Paradise and where he passed away on 13 September 1321.
The solemn celebrations in honour of the Supreme Poet take place every year on the second Sunday of September, but the programme of cultural events starts at the end of August and ends in the autumn.
The topic of 2014 is exile as the focus of a research that aims to outline the historical, political and civil, as well as allegoric and symbolic acceptance of this theme.

The calendar of Ravenna per Dante 2014 consists of many events, which range from commemorations and readings to shows and performances held before and after the 693th anniversary of Dante’s death on Sunday 14 September.

The Anniversary includes some rituals such as the meeting of the authorities of Florence in the Town Hall scheduled on Sunday, 14 September from 9.30am, an historical parade and an inaugural lecture at Sala Muratori of Classense Library. At 11.15am, a Mass for Dante will be celebrated in the Basilica San Francesco and the Municipality of Florence will offer olive oil to Dante’s Tomb.

Between 10 and 12 September, the celebrated Dante 2021 festival will return with a full programme of concerts, exhibitions, renowned guests and famous actors against the backdrop of the Ancient Franciscan Cloisters and Piazza del Popolo, inspired this year by the quotation «Amor che ne la mente mi ragiona» from Dante.

The Conversations on Dante "Andar ti fia leggero. Itinerari celesti e terreni nell’età di Dante" will be held on 16, 17, 18 and 20 September at Sala Multimediale of Dante Museum. Organized by the Municipality of Ravenna and the University of Bologna, these conversations will feature scholars and experts talking about the topic of the journey in all its aspects.

The event calendar also includes the readings of Dante, uomo della pace (on 26, 28, 29 August; 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 13 September), this year dealing with many different themes related to Dante. Do not miss El Dante, a series of readings by Franco Nembrini – and Oltre Dante. Dante's Commedia on Ravenna's stage (artistic director: Franco Palmieri).

The Basilica San Francesco hosts the readings of La Divina Commedia nel Mondo (19, 26, 30 September and 4 October), dedicated to Dante’s translations. The topic of exile will also be the subject of Letture Classensi 2014 organized by Opera di Dante and Istituzione Biblioteca Classense and curated this year by Johannes Bartuschat.

Finally, do not miss the exhibition of watercolours by the Bavarian artist Gerhard Feuser at Classense Library entitled I Paesaggi dell’Inferno di Dante (3-27 September); the free guided tours to Dante’s Tomb, Quadrarco di Braccioforte and Dante Museum as well as the poetry readings of Dante storie tante by and for children.
