On the occasion of RavennaMosaico — the Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic, the museum Classis Ravenna presents Tessere di mare. From the ancient mosaic to the modern copy, curated by Giuseppe Sassatelli. This is the very first exhibition housed in the temporary exhibition area of the newly opened museum Classis.
Gemstone of the event are the prestigious mosaics inspired to the marine world, coming from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and from the Archaeological Museum of the Territory of Populonia. The works on display evocatively show all the makings of mosaic art as a form of communication as well as the ancestral relationship of Ravenna with the sea.
The loan of the mosaic with a marine scene and many fish, which is permanently preserved in the mosaic room of the Archaeological Museum of Naples, is a unique event, since it is usually not granted for preservative reasons. Dating back to the 2nd century bC and discovered in the House of the Faun of Pompei, it was created in the so-called 1st Pompeian style. With a frame of vegetal elements, birds and other animals, the mosaic features some edible varieties of fish of the Mediterranean.
Beyond this mosaic, there are other noteworthy artworks, such as the important mosaic discovered in the archaeological area of Populonia and the mosaic copies belonging to the collection of Maestro Severo Bignami, refined expert and reproducer of Roman mosaics.
The exhibition is included in the entrance ticket of the museum Classis: €7; concession €5
