The cloister and the front garden with the loggia - the socalled Loggetta Lombardesca - are for their size and quality one of the best Venetian buildings in Ravenna, also in comparison to similar examples of the area. Of the original complex of edifices consisting of two cloisters and other  buildings with gardens, today remains only the main cloister started in 1502 and now seat of the MAR.

Cloister of the Camaldolese Monks of Classe

Classense Library - Via Alfredo Baccarini, 3
Event Time: 10am - 6pm (last admittance 4pm). Guided tours start at 10am, 11am, 12am / 2pm, 3pm and 4pm

The Classense owes its origins, its name of abbey and library to the Camaldolesi monks who run away after the 1512-battle of Ravenna and sought refuge within the city's wall. For not less that three-hundreds years the monks built the monastic complex including the Church of San Romualdo and the two cloisters. Thanks to the architectural magnificence, the solemnity of sculpture's decorations and cycles of paintings of the period between 16th and 17th century, it became the most important abbey of the Camaldolesi order

Franciscan Cloisters

Ancient Franciscan Cloisters - Via Dante Alighieri, 2
Event Time
10am - 6pm (last admittance 4pm). Guided tours start at 10am, 11am, 12am / 2pm, 3pm and 4pm

The former convent building consists of two adjoining cloisters – the Dante cloister or “della cisterna” (of the tank) and the Della Cassa cloister or of the “double portico” – whose building probably dates back respectively to the 16th and the 15th century. Defined by a colonnade and cross vaults, the two cloisters are connected through a central body and two elevated elements and they both border on the sides with the Basilica of San Francesco and the central seat of the bank Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna, owner of the entire propriety since the beginning of the 20th century
